Worcester is a city in the county of Worcestershire in the English West Midlands. It lies more or less 50km southwest of Birmingham and roughly the same distance north of Gloucester. The population is nearing the 100,000 level, a nice, medium-sized city therefore Worcester is a true undiscovered gem.

The city is quite ancient, but with a remarkably modern outlook. There’s a lot on offer for everyone: from those interested in historical sites to culture vultures. From sports fans to leisure visitors, everyone will find something in Worcester to keep him occupied.

How to get to Worcester: At a distance of just over 200km from London, the city is certainly not cut off from the rest of the UK. Road, rail and air links are excellent. Coming by car from London, you will be traveling on the M5. Leaving the M5 at junctions 6 or 7 will bring you to either Worcester north or Worcester south.

The city is also well connected to the rest of the UK by rail. There’s a direct rail link to Paddington station in London, with an approximate journey time of 2 hours 45 minutes. There are also regular trains to many of the surrounding towns.

The nearest airport is at Birmingham, only 60km away. In about half an hour therefore, you can get to an international airport with regular flights to all major UK cities and many international destinations.

Most likely the best known landmark of Worcester is the ancient Worcester cathedral. Building on this cathedral started in the year 1084. The building is home to the tomb of King John and the chapter house is the only circular one in the country.

The River Severn runs through Worcester and there are many beautiful recreational areas on the banks of the river. The city boasts three lovely parks – Gheluvelt Park, Cripplegate Park and Fort Royal, as well as many other open recreational areas.

There are 2 large woodlands within the city boundaries as well, Perry Wood and Nunnery Wood. It was in Perry Wood that Oliver Cromwell supposedly met the devil and made a pact with him. Next to Nunnery wood you will also find Worcester Woods country park.

A visit to this lovely historical city will therefore not only re-establish your cultural roots, but also provide you with ample opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. Worcester – Worcestershire is one of those rare finds that will soon become a favorite weekend getaway.
