Many homebound, disabled or senior citizens may not be aware that the USPS offers a couple of programs that can provide piece of mind that someone is checking on them once a day and will even bring your mail to your front door under certain circumstances.

The Carrier Alert Program

In July 1982, the United States Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) launched Carrier Alert, a joint effort to partner with local social service agencies across the country to offer a measure of security for one of the most vulnerable segments of our society—homebound citizens. During its 25-year history, Carrier Alert has used letter carriers’ unique daily presence in America’s communities to keep a watchful eye on elderly, infirm and disabled citizens. The value of the program has been repeatedly demonstrated as alert letter carriers have helped thousands of these citizens receive assistance. In many cases, their actions have literally saved lives.

Delivering mail to the same residences day after day, letter carriers become familiar with customers’ habits and often notice changes in routine that could mean a patron is in distress. Accumulating mail is a common clue, but lights burning in midday, pet dogs crying, drawn draperies, or in some areas, no tracks in the snow—can all signal trouble within.

When a volunteer carrier notes something unusual concerning a patron registered with Carrier Alert, he or she reports it to a postal supervisor or other designated individual who in turn contacts the sponsoring local agency. They check on the person and if something’s wrong, contact family, police or emergency services as appropriate.

Because participation is voluntary and operation depends on local agencies, the Carrier Alert program is well established in some regions and little known in others. Where it is in use, it earns constant praise–just as letter carriers across the nation do every day, with or without a formal program.

Check with your local post office to see if a Carrier Alert Program is offered in your neighborhood. If not, rest assured your letter carrier is vigilant of your presence and well-being.

Door Delivery of Mail for Physically Disabled or Elderly

In 1998, the US Congress passed the “Mail Delivery to Physically Handicapped Act.” It provides the service of mail being brought to your door as opposed to being deposited in your mailbox at the street.

For door mail deliver to begin, approval of your application by your local Post Master is required . Contact the Post Office and they will inform you of the process. The application needs to include a certificate from a licensed physician stating that the resident is physically handicapped to the extent that anything other than door delivery would pose a medical or physical hardship.

If your door delivery is authorized, you’ll need to provide either an approved house-mounted box that provides adequate protection and security for the mail or a door slot. A mailbox with a lock must have a slot that is large enough to accommodate your daily mail volume. The Postal Service neither opens a locked box nor accepts a key for this purpose.

Most of us have or will have elderly family members who will eventually need an alternative housing option, Assisted living marketing services are provided by 800Seniors.com, a leading referral
system in the assisted living industry. We provide the perfect match between seniors
searching for a facility and assisted living facilities nationwide and take the confusion and

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one third of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States. Many of these individuals suffer moderate to severe injuries, including hip fractures and traumatic brain injuries. Experts say that many falls are due to preventable factors such as muscle weakness, improper footwear, and medications.

Many elderly people choose to walk around inside their homes, either barefoot, wearing socks without shoes, or wearing slippers.

Studies have found that nearly half of the participants who reported a fall were not wearing proper footwear at the time of their fall. These people also reported more serious injuries, including fractures, sprains, dislocations, and pulled or torn muscles, ligaments or tendon. Injuries from falls are the main cause of trauma that can lead to mortality among the elderly.

Footwear influences balance and one prevention strategy is to wear sturdy, properly fitted shoes.

When choosing proper footwear consider factors such as heel collar height, sole hardness, and tread and heel construction which can also influence gait and stability. Wearing improperly fitting shoes not only affects balance, but also cause pain, foot ulcers or blisters.

Shoes with low heels and firm slip-resistant soles should be worn both inside and outside the home as a way to prevent slips, falls and injury.

Side Note: Removing throw rugs and other obstacles in the home can also prevent falls, as well as installing handrails and night lights.

Nearly 90 million Americans, or more than one-third of the population, report bouts of dizziness at some point in their lives, according to studies from the National Institutes of Health. Of those, 76 million suffer from inner-ear disorders, which can be caused by whiplash, blows to the head, viral infections, and high doses of certain antibiotics, strokes or degeneration of the inner ear’s balance function, also known as the vestibular system, which often deteriorates with age.

The vestibular system works with the visual system to keep objects in focus when the head is moving. When the head is tilted or the body position is changed with respect to gravity, the displacement of the stones causes the hair cells to bend. If there are any irregularities in this balance system of ‘bobbing buoys’ and fluid, we lose the ability to remain balanced.

Experiencing dizziness and problems with balance can be extremely disruptive, but there are many things that you can do to help your dizziness naturally. Drinking adequate amounts of fluid daily, change positions slowly to avoid dizziness and disorientation, limit the amount of salt you eat in a day to decrease the pressure of your inner ear, can all help.

In many cases, a physician will recommend a physical therapist that can customize a home-exercise program designed for each patient. In the instance of an elderly person living at home, a therapist can make home visits and assist with the exercises. Some common exercises, like jumping, sitting up and lying down rapidly and turning in circles with assistance from the therapist can help “jar” inner ear fluids.

Along with the habituation exercises, vestibular rehabilitation patients are given eye exercises that retrain the vestibular ocular reflex, an adjustment controlled by the inner ear that allows the eye to keep the field of vision steady as a person moves. The eye exercises, in which patients repeatedly move their heads from side to side or up and down while focusing on a specific target, like a letter taped to the wall, help patients steady their gaze.

As part of research on how other cultures and countries deal with their aging population and the elderly, I ran across this enlightening example on the concept of corporate caring.

Prudential Corporation Asia is part of Prudential plc (United Kingdom), a 160-year-old international retail financial services group headquartered in London. With market-leading life insurance, fund management and consumer finance operations across Asia, Prudential serves more than 22 million customers and manage ?290 billion in assets (as of 31 December 2009).

Within a decade, Prudential Corporation Asia has become the region’s leading Europe-based life insurer in terms of market coverage and number of top three market positions, with over 410,000 agents and employees. Our insurance operations span 12 markets – Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

PCA has led the retirement insurance market since it launched its business in Asia in 2002. The U.K.-based international insurer plans to increase its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities this year as baby-boomers start to retire.

The insurance company recently signed a treaty with HelpAge Korea* to provide financial support for senior citizens. PCA provides financial support through many welfare programs for the aged, such as “Seniors Participation Sharing Place,” a community of elderly widows in Seoul. In February, the insurer provided “Love Magic Pockets,” which contained New Year’s gifts and letters written by employees of PCA, to 200 senior citizens.

In addition, PCA will introduce a CSR program, “The Chairman’s Award” this year, through which the insurer will donate 170,000 won to HelpAge Korea whenever a local PCA employee registers as a volunteer, to encourage CSR activities within the firm.

In the US, Assisted living marketing services are provided by 800Seniors.com, a leading referral
system in the assisted living industry. We provide the perfect match between seniors
searching for a facility and assisted living facilities nationwide and take the confusion and

*In South Korea, HelpAge Korea has been running a volunteer-based home-care program since 1987. The organization also provides training for government-run programs, based on its own model.

This is a great story of just how wonderful it is having your own personnel concierge. My wife recently was en route to a meeting that was two hours from home. She was just starting to enter the city limits of Minneapolis and was faced with a road closed due to construction sign.

The sign stated to exit now. Without further notice, she found herself in downtown traffic jam with hundreds of other cars and no detour signs to assist with directions. Her meeting was scheduled for 8:30 sharp. She was now in a bind as time was becoming compressed. She did not have a map and without any signage, traffic was a mess. Without missing a step, she picked up her phone and called her concierge from our favorite travel and vacation booking website.

If you are unfamiliar with this perk, let me tell you briefly about it. As you will see, it’s awesome. Every time anyone books airfare through this site, you automatically receive 30 minutes of free concierge service, and as a frequent traveler… she has acquired lots of time. This concierge service is there to assist you 24/7 with most anything you may need.

Now, back to the story… She called her concierge, and conveyed the situation. The concierge immediately started assisting which helped calmed the situation. She was lost, late and needing to get some help now!

The concierge is always sitting in front of a computer, and before long had researched the Minnesota highway department’s web site for road closures. Apparently the highway department failed to tell anyone about this closing. Not good! The concierge began to give her step-by-step guidance back to the highway on the other side of the city.

It took her 30 minutes to maneuver through the city. What’s really impressive is that the concierge stayed with her the entire time. This reassured her that someone was there to help. Are you getting this? That’s Priceless!

I have to say, we are both sold on this travel and vacation booking website. Not only do we get the best deals by booking all our travel on it, but the customer service is second to none! We are life long customers. Thank you Rovia!

Every single woman in the world is going to go through what is known as the change of life". It is just part of the life of a woman and let's face it ... the alternative is dying, so a menopause symptom doesn't seem that bad.

Every single woman in the world is going to go through what is known as the change of life”. It is just part of the life of a woman and let’s face it … the alternative is dying, so a menopause symptom doesn’t seem that bad.

Unfortunately, dealing with the these overwhelming biological imperatives is never easy. For some women, it can mean years filled with unpleasant and highly stressful changes. Many women worry about how their changes affect the other people in their lives. Thankfully, if you learn to identify menopause symptoms, you can be both a comfort and a help to any women who is going through this stressful time. Learning what you can about these manifestations will help you figure out what is happening to your body and will help you to cope with drastic changes in your life.

Perhaps one of the most “popular” and well recognized changes is the “hot flash.” The hot flash is the feeling of suddenly being way too hot. It will make your face flush and your body sweat. It is as though somebody temporarily turned up the thermostat of your body way too high. Some women liken it to the experience they feel when they go from an air conditioned room to a hot sunny day, only it’s more sudden and more intense. Hot flashes can occur at any time of the day or night. Night time hot flashes are usually called “night sweats.”

One of the hardest new conditions to deal with is irregular heartbeat. Some women notice that their heartbeat will suddenly speed up or it will slow down when they have done nothing at all to cause such a reaction. A woman who is sitting still, for example, might feel her heart suddenly start to race – and then it might slow back down to a resting rate without her moving a muscle. Once in a while a woman will only learn that this has been happening when she visits the doctor for some other cause. A doctor might check a woman’s heart during a routine exam and notice that it is not acting as it should. If you are the right age, this might just be a sign that you shouldn’t ignore.

If you or your loved one suddenly appears anxious or irritable it could be a sign of menopause. Suicide rates in menopausal women are higher than in those not yet experiencing the change due to overwhelming feelings of dread or impending doom. Women who experience these sensations may mistake them for true panic attacks. When these changes do not appear to have a known cause, or occur suddenly and without an obvious reason, it is possible that you have begun the process of hormonal changes that begins in middle age. Use every resource you have to maintain your composure and do not take your negative feelings too seriously.

A woman may also suddenly have the agonizing experience of watching her clothes get tighter and tighter – until they don’t fit anymore. This is truly depressing, especially in a society that values a slim body so highly. The culprit in this weight explosion is hormonal changes that occur so rapidly and have such strong effects. The weight goes on easily and comes off hard.

An increase in itching is another manifestation that most people don’t recognize. Some women who are dealing with the change of life say that their skin constantly itches and crawls. This is a different feeling than you get with dry skin. The most accurate description is that of “ants crawling under the skin.” This is one of the more disturbing symptoms especially if you don’t know what is happening to you. If you feel itchier than usual and constantly want to scratch, call your doctor. It might be nothing more than a simple skin condition. It could also be a sign that you have started going through your “change of life”.

Learning to identify menopause symptoms will help you better understand what is going on in your own body as you go through your change of life. If you are not female, understanding what’s happening can help you be more sympathetic to the women in your life who have no choice but to go through this stressful time.

A good number of females suffer the pain of mood swings when attempting to take care of their menopause symptoms.

foreclosures We had friends over for dinner Sunday night, one couple, escaping winter on the east coast, brought up the subject of facing change. In their mid-sixties, he has taken mandatory retirement from a firm he thought he would continue with until he dropped. “I never thought about retiring,” he told us, ” and truth be known, I don’t know what to do with it, I’ve always worked.” There were the usual jokes about staying out from under his wife’s feet, and getting a hair transplant and a Harley but the reality of his dilemma struck home. All six of us at the table were of the generation not quite young enough chronologically to be declared “Boomers” but certainly not old.

juegos Once we reach our late twenty’s our muscle tissue begins to deteriorate at a rate of about one half pound per year until reach the age of fifty. After the age of fifty this rate doubles. If we are not performing strength training exercises on a daily basis all of our muscles will diminish and weaken, and our bones will become thin and brittle. The aging process makes movement and other activities more difficult so people stop the activities, however this inactivity will hasten the downward spiral and speed up the decline of your overall health and wellness.

People who are inactive throughout their lives will lose half the muscle they had at thirty years old by the time they reach seventy. It is vital for our daily living and independence as we become older to avoid muscle tissue lose. If muscle tissue is not properly exercised then you will become more disabled and will eventually become immobile, not even able to get up from a chair without help.

When your body loses muscle tissue there is a marked drop in your metabolism. Metabolism is your body’s engine and regulates how your body stores fat and distributes your caloric intake. So many people with muscle loss and slow metabolisms end up with ‘middle aged spread, that’s why most people gain more weight as they get older.

homes for sale Engaging in muscle building and toning exercises your bones, muscles and entire body will begin to rebuild and renew. This activity will remove the degenerated tissue and cells of your body and replace them with new tissue that is younger, stronger and healthier.

Increasing our hormone levels and increasing our muscle mass that diminished through our aging can not only provide you with a healthier younger looking and feeling body, but muscle tissue damage will begin to reverse to recapture some of what we have in our twenty’s.

Without proper exercise between your twenty’s and eighty’s 35% to 50% of our muscle mass can vanish. Leg muscles begin to deteriorate around the age of thirty and continue throughout the rest of your life. This decrease in muscle mass will be noticeable in a mirror because your leg will look thinner. Loss of muscle affects your body and overall health. This reduces the fat burning potential, creates fatigue issues, weakens your immune system and causes a host of other issues.

Exercise is an important activity to help you stay young and fit but not all types of exercises are intense enough for your body to create the “good” hormones. Low intensity activities like walking or a leisurely bike ride can increase your heart rate but will not release those special ‘fitness’ hormones that create metabolic efficiency, reduce the signs of aging, and help your body lose fat.

We’ve got a stretch of leisure time ahead of us uncharted by any previous generation and to survive it, rejoice in it, value it, is going to take some planning. Sure, we all talk about volunteering, taking classes, joining a social club but the trick is to actually do it; to really get out and create balance. Have you noticed at your local coffee shop the number of people who sip alone and contrast them with the groups of grey-haired ones who come in on bikes! What interests you? Birding? Check out your local Audubon. Walks; hiking? There must be a local group. What about a chapter of OLLI (Osher Life Long Learning Institute) for classes taught by peer group volunteers, often based on life experience and passion. Search out a community garden in your neighborhood and if one doesn’t exist, see what you can do to rally a group to find the land to get one started You can be published without charge. You can to republish this article in your website or blog. Please provide links Active.

The Summit XC Stroller Jogger Hybrid is one of the latest in a line of rugged, all-terrain baby strollers by the award winning Baby Jogger company. It is best described as a hybrid so can be used for jogging in variable terrain or walks around the city.

The standard single model (for one baby) features two 16″ rear tires and a single, swiveling 12″ front for precise maneuvering. The latter can even be locked into position for workout purposes in line with the ethos of all products created by this company, founded 25 years ago by Phil Baechler, running enthusiast and father.

The official slogan for the Summit Baby Jogger Stroller Hybrid is “No Boundaries, No Limits – Go Anywhere”. You can understand this well when you learn that each wheel features its own independent suspension. It’s not just a comfortable ride that was on the mind of the designers when they created this stroller. The Summit XC also features hand operated rear brakes for refined control.

The basics are also covered so well that you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was the Lexus of baby strollers. Baby is secured thanks to a padded five-point safety harness. The Summit XC also comes with an adjustable sun canopy, rear parking brake and good storage in the form of a seat back compartment and an under seat storage basket.

This stroller also comes in double and triple versions. These strollers are wider, but the length is about the same as a single stroller.

Who Should Buy One?

The Summit XC Baby Jogger Stroller is unique in being a true hybrid. There are many strollers on the market that claim to be but fail miserably. They may not be robust enough for going off-road or they may be too bulky and cumbersome for city use. The Summit stroller is great for use on any terrain whether you are walking or running.

Perhaps the only downside is that there are lighter alternatives for city use i.e. you pay a premium in terms of excess weight when you use it in the city. If you intend on making most of your journeys on the sidewalk for quick trips such as going down to the store then this stroller might not be for you. The Summit is great not only for regular jogging/running, but it is also perfect if you need to use for smaller outings. It’s also worth knowing that Baby Jogger strollers are made so well that their resale value tends to be a much higher percentage of their original price when compared to the competition.
